This page briefly discusses some of the important uses of simple alcohols, such as methanol, ethanol and propan-2-ol. The stronger hydrogen bonding between alcohol molecules means that more energy is required to convert the liquid to vapor, and boiling points are therefore high. Methanol (CH 3OH) and ethanol (CH 3CH 2OH) are the first two members of the homologous series of alcohols. Consequently, less energy is required to break these molecules away from the surface of the liquid and turn them into a vapor. Only weak London dispersion forces hold molecules of nonpolar alkanes together in the liquid phase. ![]() From: Encyclopedia of Food and Health, 2016. The term ‘denatured alcohol’ refers to alcohol products adulterated with toxic and/or bad tasting additives (e.g., methanol, benzene, pyridine, castor oil, gasoline, isopropyl alcohol, and acetone), making it unsuitable for human consumption. Finally, the methylated pectin was washed with abs EtOH and dried under diminished pressure. (a) Molecular mas of methanol (CH3OH)(1×C)+(3×H)+(1×O)+(1×H)12+(3×1)+16+132 u.
